Hughes, Bulls turn back Tides

DURHAM - Behind the red-hot bat of first baseman Rhyne Hughes, the Durham Bulls overcame a three-run deficit to win 5-3 over the Norfolk Tides on Sunday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Hughes went 3-for-4 with a single, double, home run and two RBIs, including the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Norfolk jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by catcher Chad Moeller off Bulls starter Jason Cromer (4-2). The Tides added two in the fourth to make it 3-0.

The Bulls began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Jon Weber and tied it in the fifth.

Hughes' solo homer to deep right began the inning, and Matt Joyce capped it with a sacrifice fly.

The Bulls took the lead in the sixth on Hughes' RBI double to right-center, and Durham added a run in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Reid Brignac and Joyce.

Jorge Julio relieved Cromer in the eighth, and Jason Childers came on in the ninth for his third save in as many days.

The Bulls close out their five-game, four-day series against Norfolk today at 7:05 p.m.
