McCoy Stadium - Pawtucket, Rhode Island

A Fan's Review

Located less that an hour from the parent club at Fenway Park, McCoy Stadium serves as home base for the Pawtucket Paw Sox.

In the late 1990's, the stadium was remodeled increasing seating capacity to a little more than 10,000. The ballpark is clean, open, and accessible. Free parking is available across from the ballpark on Division St. at the junior high school.

All seating rests above the playing field making access to players for autographs a daunting challenge. But as always, baseball fans accommodate themselves to their surroundings - bringing fishing line and long poles to "reach" the players down below (see the Ballpark Culture page).

Staff is courteous and friendly. In fact, one of the ushers volunteered to give me a personal tour of the ballpark taking me in to see the luxury box section and explaining the latest additions to the stadium.

The PA system is fan friendly (not obtrusive as in many ballparks these days). If you are purchasing "blue seats", be advised that the section immediately behind home plate is situated beneath the press box and the view of the playing field is severely obstructed. Instead, seek to purchase seats in the green section (they only cost $10.00).

Virtually all seating is in the shade. There's a a grassy knoll in left field where some fans set up camp and enjoyed the game in the sun.

Food selection is good and prices are reasonably within today's standards for ballparks. And for the health conscious, there's one foodstand for you in left field.

In sum, my visit to McCoy Stadium was an enjoyable afternoon of baseball. The only negative - sitting eight feet above the players (why did they do that?).
