A Fan's Review
Nationals Park is the home of the National League Central Washington Nationals.
To begin, it boggles the mind to think that Washington DC - our nation's capital - had been a baseball orphan for more than three decades before the Nationals landed a franchise here.
Hopefully, that will never happen again - and everything about Nationals Park indicates that it won't. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Nationals Park. It's not much to look at from the outside - just a hunk of concrete. Hopefully over time, that will change and the Nationals will seize on the history and tradition of the teams like the Washington Senators
and incorporate that culture in their own developing history with sculptures and banners that ring the ballpark - and perhaps even with restaurants and bars that will create a neighborhood "feel" to the ballpark. The nearby Potomac River would make an awesome setting for this type of development - and land appears to be "available". Parking is ample and can be found in garages - but do go online and purchase a parking ticket in advance on the Nationals website (steep at $45 - but worth it). If you arrive early, procede to the center field gate. It opens early and you can view batting practice, get a bite to eat, or just walk around in the expansive plaza. Walk around once inside the ballpark..........on the upper level in left field you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol Building. All levels are accessible via escalators - but make sure you go up before the 7th inning - because after that - they only go down. The food at the concession stands is unremarkable - but again - it's a brand new ballpark and perhaps they'll develop a "signature menu choice" over the years. The main scoreboard is state of the art - is not obtrusive or "glitzy" as in some ballparks. In fact, it's rather pleasing on the eyes - and definitely chock full of pertinent game information. Ballpark staff are personable and helpful - don't be afraid to ask........one usher walked with me to find the spot where I could see the capitol building. In sum.........good job Washington......and make sure you keep THIS franchise.
