Las Vegas 51's -AAA Baseball Team

The Diamond Baseball Tour began (and would conclude) in Las Vegas. Despite the myriad of entertainment possibilities, I decided to attend a Triple-A minor league baseball game at Cashman Field. Good decision.

The Las Vegas 51s have the proud distinction of being the longest enduring franchise in the history of professional sports in Southern Nevada. Las Vegas Triple-A baseball was born on April 10, 1983 before a crowd of 10,622 at Cashman Field and has since enjoyed 24 seasons in the Silver State.

Nicknamed after the mysterious "Area 51" location in the Nevada desert, the Los Angeles Dodgers pounced on the opportunity to relocate from Vero Beach, FLA. The Dodgers have sinced moved on and the 51's are now affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays.

At the time of my visit to the 51's ballpark, the Dodgers were in the thick of the pennant race, they had all but defeated the roster of the 51's with recent call-ups to the big leagues. Despite that, Las Vegas continues to draw near the top in attendance, though the crowd tonight would not approach capacity (9,000).

Much like other minor league ballparks, Cashman Field maintains a family atmosphere. Expecting a hot summer night, a cool breeze permeated the facility - and it was a fun night watching the "next generation" of big leaguers attempt to make their mark on professional baseball.
